Pfc Verl F. Townsend was a chauffeur, employed by the Union City Company in Randolph County, Indiana before he enlisted in Cincinnati, Ohio on 13 November 1943.

On 26 March 1945, in the vicinity of Sandhofen, Germany, he was severely wounded in action by artillery shell fragments in the buttock and hip. On 2 April he died of his wounds, the exact location is not known.
