Pfc Charles E. Preston attended high school for one year and was a sales clerk, employed by the Ashuelot Paper Company.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Manchester, New Hampshire on 4 August 1942.

In January 1945, he was wounded in action at his shoulder by artillery shell fragments and he recovered in hospital until February.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the head and hand.
