Pvt James D. Nelsen graduated from McKinley Jr. High School in 1941. He was employed by the Belle City Malleable Iron Company when he enlisted on 17 July 1944. He was sent overseas in February 1945.

Pvt Nelsen was reported missing in action after his boat was struck by an artillery shell during the crossing of the Rhine River.
