Sgt Frederick R. Schlaanstine graduated from Kennett High School in 1943 and was a college student.He enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 2 September 1943.
He first served at the Anzio Beachhead.
He was reported wounded in action on 8 September 1944 at Besancon, France and hospitalized for two weeks. He returned to his unit when they were ingaged in the fighting in the Vosges Mountains sector.
On 25 October 1944, five American soldiers and five French civilians were killed by an explosion of a time-delayed bomb left by the Germans in the sawmill Montplaisir in Les Roges Eaux. This tragic event is remembered on a monument at the site of the sawmill.
