Pvt Joseph Stankowski attended high school for three years and was a miner, employed by the Henderson Mine.

He enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 30 August 1944 and was sent overseas in January 1945.

His brother, Pfc George Stankowski, was killed in action in Italy on 22 December 1943. He is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Italy.
