Pvt John M. Baber graduated from East Bank High School and was a car repairman employed by the Charleston Transit Co.

He enlisted in Huntington, West Virginia on 11 November 1943 and had his basic training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his back.
