Pfc Edward J. Burnes attended high school for three years and was a machinist before he enlisted in Hartford, Connecticut on 9 July 1941.

In March 1944, he was wounded by small arms fire to his knee during the fighting in the Anzio beachhead.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to the neck, buttock, and his hip.
