1st Lt Robert H. Cherney attended Franklin High School and the University of Oregon before he joined the army.

He was married to Elizabeth Fryer in Pulanski, Arkansas on 25 September 1942.

He was severely wounded in action when his jeep drove over a landmine. He died of his wounds on 2 December 1944. The exact date when he was reported wounded, and the location where he died is not known.
