Pfc John T. Van Cleave joined the Regular Army on 20 May 1939.

After the declaration of war, Van Cleave served for about a year as a sergeant of the military police but in order to serve overseas, he asked to transfer to the infantry. He was sent to Italy in October 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.
