2nd Lt Joseph J. Gross attended high school for four years and was a shipping clerk employed by the Amiral Company.

He enlisted in Trenton, New Jersey on 7 August 1941. On 30 October 1943 he was married to Anna Stemplinger at Fort Custer, Michigan.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions in the vicinity of Bourg - Bruche, France on 23 November 1944. For his actions on 24 November he was awarded the Silver Star Medal. Both medals were awarded posthumously.

He was reported severely wounded in action in January 1945 and he died of his wounds on 18 January. The exact date of the report and the location where he died is not known.
