1st Sgt Francis M. Herring attended college and was an advertising agent employed by the Russel Richard Allen Company.

He joined the National Guard in St. Augustine, Florida on 25 November 1940.

For his actions on 8 October 1944 near Sapois, France he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to his back.
