1st Lt Paul J. Tron graduated from Harding High School and worked on the family farm when he joined the National Guard on 15 October 1941.

Until October 1942 he was stationed at Waller Airfield in Trinidad. He returned to the United States to attend the Officers Candidate School. For awhile he was stationed at Camp Wheeler, Georgia where he received preparatory training and in December 1942 he started officers training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He commissioned on 25 February 1943 and in March he reported for duty at Camp Perry, Ohio. In September 1943 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

Early July 1944 he was sent to Italy.
