Pfc James H. McEldowney attended Elkins High School and was a stenographer employed by the Western Md. Ry. Co.

He enlisted in Clarksburg, West Virginia on 6 August 1943.

In September 1944, in France, he was wounded in action by small arms fire in the thigh and hospitalized until October 1944. In October he was wounded again at his foot and arm by artillery shell fragments and was hospitalized until December 1944.
