Pvt Donald L. Dailey was raised by his grandparents. His mother Lena died when he was two years old.

He attended the O'Neill Public Schools and was unemployed when he joined the Regular Army on 4 November 1939.

He was wounded and hospitalized several times in Sicily, Italy and France by small arms fire, artillery shell fragments and a landmine.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the thorax and leg.
