Pvt John J. Yavaniski attended St. Mary's Academy and was employed by the Specialty Insulation Mfg. Co.

He enlisted in Albany, New York on 12 March 1943 and was sent overseas in August 1943.

He was wounded in action in Italy in November 1943 and was hospitalized in North Africa. Returning to Italy, he was wounded a second time on 10 March 1944. After recovery from this second wound, he was sent to France.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments at his forehead.

He is remembered on a monument in Rupt-sur-Moselle.
