Pfc Gilbert J. Hinrichs attended high school for two years and was a farmhand before he joined the Regular Army in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 29 July 1940.

He died of wounds, sustained by mortar shell fragments in his head. The exact date when he was reported wounded in action and the location where he died are not known.
