Pvt John H. Spriggs enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 8 March 1943.

He enlisted two months before he would have graduated from St. Mary High School.

He received infantry training at Camp Walters, Texas.

He was taken prisoner south of Cisterna di Latina, Italy on 1 March 1944 and died in Stalag XI-A.

He was initially buried at the cemetery of Altengrabow but after the war, American grave registration teams were unable to locate his grave.
