Pvt Daniel T. Smith graduated from James A. Gray High School in 1936. He was employed at the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia.

He enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 29 July 1944 and was sent overseas in January 1945.
