1st Lt Howard E. Nicholson attended high school for four years and worked in the machine shop of the Weirton Steel Company, before he enlisted on 16 February 1942.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his actions on 24 May 1944 in Italy. The citation cited: On the afternoon of 24 May 1944, Italy, 1st Lt Nicholson, while reconnoitering enemy positions, shot and killed an enemy sniper during a short, fierce fire fight. This fight drew the concentrated fire of 20 enemy riflemen, and with bullets whipping all about.
