T/5 Levi Atkins attended high school for four years and was a mechanic before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 13 March 1942.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions on 27 December 1944 in France and a Silver Star Medal posthumously for his actions on 18 April 1945 in Nürnberg, Germany.

He was killed by small arms fire in the head.
