Pvt William L. Stevens was raised in Mount Lebanon, Syria until he returned to the U.S. in 1934. He received most of his schooling in Syria and attended high school for four years.

He ran his own grocery before he enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida on 1 March 1941.
