1st Lt William E. McMahon attended high school for four years and worked in the machine shop of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. at the Ohio Strathers Works.He enlisted in Akron, Ohio on 15 August 1942 and had his basic training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. In April 1943 he was commissioned at the officer training school at Fort Benning, Georgia.
He was an instructor in radio and communication before he went overseas in November 1944.
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his actions on 24 December 1944.
