The citations reads: "For gallantry in action. On 6 November 1944, when company K, 15th infantry, came under heavy small arms fire which held up their attack, Sgt Bubb left cover and crawled and ran over 200 yards of level terrain, though a mortar shell burst within 10 to 15 yards of him. He reached a knoll safely, and brought effective mortar fire on the enemy, causing them to withdraw. When the company continued forward in its attack, Sgt Bubb was killed by an enemy artillery shell as he directed fire from his observation post."

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the thorax.
