T/5 John J. Smiertelny attended Michigan High School and was employed by the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Company before he enlisted on 16 February 1942.The exact date he was reported wounded in action and the location where he died, is not known.
At the time of his death, the 3rd Infantry Division was holding defensive positions north of the town of Colmar.
