Sgt Walter O. Shreffler attended high school for three years and was employed at the Erie Proving Grounds before he enlisted in Toledo, Ohio on 11 June 1943.

In October 1944, Sgt Shreffler was wounded by artillery shell fragments in his neck and arm. He was discharged from the hospital in November 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the thorax.
