Pfc James J. McElroy attended high school for three years and was a shipping clerk employed by the Slim Fit Dress Company before he enlisted in Hartford, Connecticut on 20 February 1943.

In July 1944, in Italy, he was wounded at his finger by artillery shell fragments. In September 1944 he was wounded again by hand grenade fragments and he was discharged from the hospital in October 1944.

He was wounded in action by artillery shell fragments in the abdomen, and later died of those wounds. The exact date when he was wounded and the exact location where he died is not known.
