S/Sgt Willard B. Matchett attended high school for one year and was a carpenter before he joined the Regular Army in Seattle, Washington on 11 February 1941.

In August 1944 he was wounded by artillery shell fragments in his face. In September he was discharged from the hospital.

He was killed by small arms fire in the side of his body.
