Pvt Carl Cox Sr. was a filling station attendant before he enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 15 July 1944.His brother Alfred, a merchant marine man, was killed on 3 March 1943 when his ship, the SS Meriwether Lewis, part of the Murmansk Convoy HX 227 was torpedoed by U-634 in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of Iceland. He is remembered at the Tablets of the Missing at Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial.
