T/Sgt Walter J. Harris attended high school for four years and was a miner, employed by the Consolidated Copper Mines Corporation, before he enlisted in Salt Lake City, Utah on 26 February 1941.

In March 1944, in Italy, he was wounded by artillery shell fragments in the face and leg.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his action on 15 August 1944 after the landing in St. Tropez, France.

He was severely wounded in action on 24 October 1944 by small arms fire in the cranium, face and neck. The exact location to where he was evacuated and where he died, is not known.
