S/Sgt William W. Mattox attended high school for three years and was employed by the Norfolk and Western Railway Company before he enlisted in Huntington, West Virginia on 13 April 1943.

In May 1944, in Italy, he was wounded by artillery shell fragments in the forearm. He was discharged from the hospital in June.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his thorax and leg.
