S/Sgt Hurley M. Phillips worked in the family farm before he enlisted at Camp Forrest, Tennessee on 9 November 1942.

In December 1943 he was wounded by artillery shell fragments in the thigh. In February 1944 he was discharged from the hospital.

He was killed by small arms fire.
