Sgt Hormidas J. Breau was a woodworker before he joined the National Guard in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on 16 January 1941.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for gallantry in action on 5 September 1944 during the attack on Besançon. When his platoon was surrounded by German machine guns, self propelled guns and riflemen, Sergeant Breau killed four enemy machine gunners, silencing their weapons and opening a route which enabled him to lead his platoon back to the company and safety.
