S/Sgt Stanley C. Banek attended Crane Technical High School for three years and was a bartender before he enlisted on 16 February 1942.

On 23 May 1944, in Italy, S/Sgt Banek wiped out a reinforced enemy machine gun emplacement. He crawled 50 yards across level terrain with only growing wheat for concealment into machinegun, rifle and mortar fire that clipped the wheat stalks inches above his body. He threw two grenades and fired his Thomson machinegun on the enemy position, killed three enemy and captured five others.

S/Sgt Banek was killed by a bullet in his back.
