Pfc Jack K. Tawes graduated from Ferndale High School in 1940 and attended Washington State University. He worked on the family farm.He enlisted in Seattle, Washington on 11 November 1943.
He was wounded in action on 2 November 1944 by artillery shell fragments in the femur and thigh resulting in a hematoma. He died of his wounds a day later. The exact location is not known.
