S/Sgt. Jacob Benish graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Plains, and worked in a Plains silk mill.

He enlisted on 20 August 1943, and received his basic training at Camp Haan, California, where he was attached to an anti-aircraft unit. Shortly before going overseas on 3 July 1944, he was transferred to the infantry.

He was wounded in action in Germany on 18 September 1944 in France but had recovered and returned to active duty.
