Sgt Mathew P. Rodman was a machine oiler, employed by the Inland Lime & Stone Co. before he enlisted in Traverse City, Michigan on 14 July 1942.A round of enemy artillery fell in the vicinity of 203 anti-tank mines, causing several to explode. Nine men where killed, three were wounded.
He was killed because his body was crushed by the blast.
