Pfc John C. Loncher was a carpenter and employed by the Tyrone Limestone Company before he enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 2 December 1942. He was sent overseas on 1 July 1944.On 17 January, one round of enemy artillery fell in the vicinity of 203 anti-tank mines, causing several to explode. Nine enlisted men were killed, one was seriously wounded and two were lightly wounded.
Pfc Loncher was killed because his body was crushed by the blast.
