1st Sgt James R. Sage attended 2 years of college and worked in a petroleum company before he joined the Regular Army on 27 October 1940.

In 1940 he was stationed at Fort Clayton Military Reservation in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone.

On 13 September 1944 the command post of the Regimental HQ, in the vicinity of Loisy, was overrun by enemy forces.
