More information
1st Lt Ray H. Weiershauser attended college for four years and was an accountant at the State of California Department of Finance before he joined the Regular Army in Sacramento, California on 21 March 1941.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. The citation reads: "for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 and 12 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, near Biesdorf, Germany, Lieutenant Weiershauser was leading his platoon in an assault through a strongly defended enemy woods. Forced by the loss of key personnel to reorganize his own and an adjacent platoon, he led them on throughout the day. On the following day, 12 February 1945, he again led a headlong assault through thick woods to relieve a surrounded company. Lieutenant Weiershauser's courage, aggressiveness, and skill enabled him to achieve the mission assigned and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army."
