Pvt Sander R. Hoving worked in a machine shop before he enlisted in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 4 February 1943. He was sent overseas in May 1944 and arrived in France in June.

Pvt Hoving was reported wounded in action on 25 December 1944 when he was hit by a sniper's bullet in the upper right leg. For this wound he was hospitalized in France until 22 January 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart a first time.

In a letter, written on 4 February 1945 he stated that he was traveling around, looking for his unit after he had left the hospital. He must have rejoined his unit between 4 and 6 February in Beaufort, Luxembourg.

He was killed by schrapnel and died before he could be evacuated to a field hospital.
