S/Sgt Howard C. Nelson graduated from Beaverhead County High School and attended Sacramento Junior College and the University of California at Berkely. He was employed by the California and Hawaiian Sugar Refinery Company.

He enlisted in San Francisco, California on 13 July 1942. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied at Stanford University and the University of Arizona. When the program was discontinued he was sent to Camp Adair. He was sent overseas in September 1944.
