Sgt James A. Edwards attended high school for four years and was a shipping clerk before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 3 July 1942.

On 11 September 1944 he was promoted to Sergeant.
He was reported seriously wounded in action on 16 September when the 1st Battalion advanced from Nomeny towards Sainte Genévieve, France.
