Pfc Cyril W. Schmidt graduated from Ashland High School in 1938.

He was unemployed when he volunteered for the U.S. Army in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 7 October 1942. He was sent overseas in June 1944.

He was seriously wounded in France on 25 September 1944 by shrapnel to both legs for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was hospitalized until December before returning to the front lines.
