T/Sgt John E. Davis attended high school for four years and was a sales clerk before he joined the Regular Army in Jacksonville, Florida on 26 November 1940.

In September 1944 he was wounded by a bullet in his shoulder and after recovering, returned to his unit in October 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the inguinal region and the groin.
