Pfc David S. Renfro graduated at Lamar High School and worked on a farm before he enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 4 November 1942. After completing basic training at Camp Pickett, Virginia and Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, he was sent to Camp Phillips, Kansas. After being assigned to his unit, he continued his training in the deserts of Arizona and California at what is now known as Fort Irwin. On 30 June 1944, the 80th boarded trains and set off for Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. They then sailed aboard the SS Queen Mary on 4 July 1944 and landed a few days later in Scotland.

The 80th arrived in France on 8 August 1944.
