S/Sgt Thomas E. Whitman attended high school for four years and was a fireman before he enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 21 September 1942. He was sent overseas on 1 July 1944.

He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 October 1944, in France.
