Pfc Milton C. Smithers graduated from the Clinton High School and was a foreman employed by Elko Chemical Works Inc. before he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 22 May 1943.
On 23 November 1943 he was married to Helen Fox in Grenada, Mississippi.
He was sent overseas on 14 January 1944.
He was wounded by a bullet in the thigh.
