More information

1st Lt Kenneth H. Carlson attended attended International Falls High School for four years and was employed by a WPA project at Camp Curry in Willow River, Pine County, Minnesota.

He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Luxembourg on 27 December 1944. The citation reads in part: "On 27 December 1944, Lt Carlson led a three man patrol in an attempt to capture enemy troops for interrogation, who were billeted in a nearby village. Despite the hazards involved in infiltrating through enemy lines, the patrol, by using the tactic of surprise entry in buildings, and by trapping other enemy soldiers in a cellar, effected the capture of a total of twenty three of the enemy."

On 14 January Col McVickar was captured by two German soldiers. Lt Carlson, together with Sgt Fred A. Blanchard, organized a patrol to save him. Together with Col Jacobs, 3rd Battalion Commander, Carlson went to the place where Col McVickar was captured. With an L Company patrol, the German position was attacked. The body of Col McVickar was found. During this attack, Lt Carlson was killed.
