Pfc William A. Boutwell enlisted at Fort McPherson Atlanta, Georgia on 18 February 1942.

First he was registered as missing in action. On 1 May 1945 he was identified. According to data from the IDPF he was buried by German citizens at the village cemetery in Kruchten, Germany. Later he was evacuated to the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
