Sgt Henry L. McCullough attended Matagorda High School.

Sgt McCullough was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously for heroic achievement in Germany on 5 February 1945. The citation reads in part: On 5 February 1945, Sgt McCullough, as a member of a reconnaissance patrol, crossed the Sure River. Patrolling through Wallendorf, Germany, and into the Siegfried Line the encountered, and after a sharp battle, routed an enemy patrol. After thoroughly reconnoitering the enemy territory and acquiring valuable information Sgt McCullough successfully returned across the river under intense enemy machine gun fire.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to his head.
